The Master of Arts (MA) in Middle Eastern Political Economy is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the economic, political, and social dynamics that shape the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The program blends theoretical and practical approaches, integrating insights from economics, political science, sociology, history, and international relations to examine the complexities of the region's political economy. The primary goal of this program is to equip students with the analytical tools and knowledge necessary to understand the interaction between politics and economics in the MENA region. The curriculum fosters critical thinking and scholarly inquiry while preparing students for careers in academia, policy analysis, international organizations, government, NGOs, and the private sector.
Graduates would get the ability to;
Examine the interplay between state institutions, markets, and society in the MENA region.
Analyze resource distribution, economic policies, and the role of oil and natural gas in shaping regional political and economic power.
Understand how globalization, neoliberal economic policies, and regional conflicts impact economic development.
Studying the long-term economic transformations of the region, including issues of industrialization, economic diversification, and the challenges posed by unemployment, poverty, and inequality.
Analyze the effects of economic liberalization, state-led development, and the role of foreign aid and investment.
Investigate the political institutions of the Middle East, with a focus on authoritarianism, democratization processes, and the impact of state-society relations.
Assessing the role of social movements, political parties, and the growing importance of civil society in shaping political economy outcomes.
Exploring the role of foreign powers and international organizations in shaping the political economy of the region.
Addressing key social issues such as gender, youth unemployment, migration, and the role of education in promoting economic growth and political stability.
Analyze the intersection of economic policies and social justice, with a focus on issues such as human rights and environmental sustainability.
The MA program consists of two years, the first for core and elective courses and the second one is for writing dissertation. Graduates of the MA in Middle Eastern Political Economy are well-positioned for careers in a variety of fields, including Government and Public Policy, International Organizations, Think Tanks and Research Institutes, Private Sector and Consultancy, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
